Friday’s Glow Fair Festival – S11E30

Glow Fair Friday Main-1

In its third year, it’s the first time to attend the Glow Fair festival as I had been going to Toronto for NXNE in previous years. This year’s NXNE has been confusing with their changes and what not better way to finally go to Glow Fair.

From its website, it’s a Music + Light + Art festival. It closes 9 blocks of Bank St. in Ottawa. Friday’s music lineup were Caveboy, Fevers, Young Galaxy and Keys N Krates.

It’s been quite a long time I have seen Young Galaxy live. Seeing them live at Glow Fair, I did not know about the changes in their lineup. Missing was their lead member, Stephen Ramsay. Catherine McCandless was mainly on the vocals. Overall, a great performance from Young Galaxy.

Glow Fair is a fun festival for all ages and there’s various activities throughout Bank St. The festival runs until Saturday.

From The WildWorks Top 50 of 2013, It’s The Top 10! – S09E17 (Part 2)

WildWorks Vinyl December 30 v3

I had to split the entries this week because of the tribute to Anita Mui running on the same day. On this edition of WildWorks, it was the top 10 Canadian indie music of 2013. It’s considered the third part to The WildWorks Top 50 of 2013. 2013 had some good releases from Canadian musicians and bands. Myself and Lauren counted down to the 50 albums and EPs that came out this year. The number one for this year is Basia Bulat because Tall Tall Shadow (her third record) is considered a strong album and some of the songs showed some emotions as it dealt with loss.
Rounding out the top 10 are Shad, Arcade Fire, The Darcys, Born Ruffians, Young Galaxy, Austra, DIANA, Louise Burns and Gold & Youth.
The full list will be posted up on New Year’s Day.

Before airing the top 10, there was a pre-show as I played the best of 2013 where I forgot to add bands and musicians left out of my top 50 of 2013.
You can check the playlist over at this link. You can listen to the audio below.

Goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014, Happy New Year!

Interviews with Language Arts and FIRExFIRE / Chatting Hong Kong Films – S08E34

Language Arts FIRExFIRE Teal Grid

After several weeks of Candice writing on the blog, it’s nice to be back and writing. I decided to give her a break for this week.
On the April 10th edition of WildWorks on CKCU-FM, myself and Candice had the opportunity to interview with Toronto-based bands, Language Arts and FIRExFIRE. Both bands were in Ottawa last Friday as they were playing at venues. Language Arts was at Raw Sugar Cafe, opening up for Gianna Lauren. FIRExFIRE was playing at Cafe Dekcuf. It was definitely a busy Friday.
Overall, both were great and it was a privilege to see Kristen (of Language Arts) again and finally meet the members of FIRExFIRE. Thanks again to the two bands.

To listen to the interviews, the audio are posted below.
The interview with Language Arts has two versions. The one posted to Soundcloud is the entire version, while the one aired on CKCU-FM (and on their On-Demand) had a segment edited out.

On the Wild 10 Countdown, New Summer (Doldrums Remix) by Young Galaxy takes the top spot this week. The summary and playlist for the podcast can be seen here.

Chinese New Year 2013: The CNY & Valentine’s Day Show – S08E25

CNY at CKCU

Gong Hei Fat Choy again!
It’s an annual thing to do the Chinese New Year edition of the radio show. I finally got Candice to join me for this year’s occasion as I previously wanted her to join me on the 2012 edition of the CNY radio show but she was busy with other things. This year made it happier for myself as we got to talk about the traditions and festivities of Chinese New Year.
As usual, we played the Chinese music related to the holiday, no matter how we scoffed at the cheesy tunes played, it can be similar to Christmas music being played non-stop. There were a few “snake” songs played as this year is “the year of the snake.”

The photo shown has us holding Chinese New Year goodies and decorations. It’s the second year to bring the addictive rice crackers and cannot stop eating those.

Aside from Chinese New Year, we also played some love songs for Valentine’s Day. It was pretty jam packed to playing CNY and V-Day songs and both themes have become a yearly staple for my radio show. For the Valentine’s Day show, I would always play a couple of Cantopop love songs and one in particular has been played on V-Day, which happened to be 情人 (translated as Lover) by Beyond.
To my own astonishment, Candice did not know Firestruck by Young Galaxy. I thought she heard songs from their 2009 album, Invisible Republic.

This week’s Wild 10 Countdown has Hayden at the top spot. The summary and other songs played are over at this link.
You can check the playlist from the CNY & V-Day show over at this link.
Lion dance performances have slightly calmed down after Monday and anticipating for the parade in Ottawa Chinatown this Saturday afternoon. Hope to see you there.

The George Stroumboulopoulos & Young Galaxy Interviews – S06E28

That’s right, I tried to make it a bit secretive on who I was going to air for the interview segment for the March 16th radio show at CKCU-FM. I did Twitter and Facebook a few people that I got to interview George Stroumboulopoulos. As written from the last entry on the Genie Awards, there’s no need to summarize my experience.
Today’s radio show was not too bad but the recording for the podcast version was held in a different location and you will notice a bit of difference in the sound. Radio Camp is happening at the station because of March Break for elementary and high school students in the Ottawa area.
Also on the show was another interview with Montreal’s Young Galaxy as they were in town on the weekend embarking on their tour. The band is back with a new album, Shapeshifting and they have new members. So far, they are sounding amazing and it was privilege to see them live again.
Album pick for week of March 16. It finally came out and it could be considered a release for 2011 but originally released in September 2010. It’s none other than Passive Me Aggressive You by the New Zealand band, The Naked and Famous. I have been playing them a lot. Expect to hear other tracks aside from Punching In a Dream and Young Blood.
Without further ado, you can check the playlist at this link. The Wild 10 Countdown summary is at this link.
Don’t forget to listen to the show or the interviews.

3 Concerts in 3 Days on One Entry – S05E19

Ohbijou at Babylon 028
Part 3 – November 7, 2009
After two nights at Mavericks Bar, the third concert I went was at Babylon Nightclub. I went to see Ohbijou with Silver Starling and Giant Hand. Before I write about Ohbijou’s performance, I went to Canteen Art Shop + Gallery for another Bands Undone session and it was none other than Silver Starling. In a way, I got see them two times. Silver Starling is a Montreal indie pop/rock band. I got to say that their music style is similar to Arcade Fire and Young Galaxy. After the session, I did not know that some of the members are closely linked to Arcade Fire and one was formerly with Young Galaxy. Oddly enough that Young Galaxy was in town for a concert. As previously mentioned that there’s so many great concerts in November.

All I can say that it was great to see the two Brian’s at Canteen. I couldn’t have been happy to see people around and have fun chatting.

I had the chance to interview two members of Ohbijou for another future airing on my radio show at CKCU-FM. There were a few goof ups during the interview, which will be edited out. Onto their performance, as usual, the crowd was packed and it was even hot (temperture-wise) during their set. Their encore set was excellent as Howie and Rolf of The Acorn helped out.

Overall, great show but the lightning was tough to shoot and I usually don’t use flash a lot.
You can view the photo by clicking to this link.
Now, I can finally rest up after three days of craziness and taxi riding late in the night.
Here is the video I taped when they sang St.Francis.
