This week saw the release of two new music albums. One from Basia Bulat and the other being the return of You Say Party. 2016 sees some fantastic releases from Canadian musicians and bands and what not better to go through these two album. I had the opportunity to listen to the albums on vinyls.
Good Advice by Basia Bulat
Released on February 12th, Good Advice is her fourth studio album and the unique part to this album was that it’s produced Jim James of My Morning Jacket. For those that don’t know, being a fan of The Strombo Show, Bulat was on George Stroumboulopoulos’ radio show in 2014 and she made a mention of My Morning Jacket being one of her favourite bands. Not knowing her soon-to-be album at that time had inklings of Jim James producing.
With her new album, the theme running through each tracks go through heartbreak and breakup. Bulat’s last album, Tall Tall Shadow went through loss and sorrow. This album is entirely different. The first half of the album sounds fast pace and no slow melodies in the form of a ballad. The latter half of the album is more relaxed.
One song that felt strong is Let Me In. You can hear the emotion and the heartbreak of the song. It’s like being locked out of the door and trying to get back in.
The song, The Garden slightly reminded me of a song from her 2010 album, Heart of My Own. That song being The Shore. When listening to The Garden, it’s reminding me of walking into a big garden whereas The Shore reminded me walking to a beach or some place that’s near water.
OK, I couldn’t think of a good title. On this week’s edition of the show, I had the opportunity to have Gloria from Scary Bear Soundtrackjoin me on the show because she has been promoting a live show at Babylon Nightclub for Wednesday night (today). It’s also her final live show as she will be moving to Nunavut at the end of January. Even though, it’s her swan song, the band is doing a music video party release before leaving to the Northern confines of the Arctic.
On the radio show, Gloria picked some of her music picks from the likes of Melissa Laveaux and gatesgatesgates while there were brand new music on my end from You Say Party, Leif Vollebekk and The Matinee. January is a bit slow in terms of new music being released. It was another blessing in disguise to have a guest on the show. It was an unexpected surprise to play You Say Party’s new song right away as it was announced on social media and music sites. It’s great to hear about the band reuniting after their tough time back in 2010.
Also mentioned during the live show was talking PSY’s Gangnam Style. Overall, a good mix of new wave, rock and folk music all in one for this week’s show.
The first half of the show for this blog is the Wild 10 Countdown. For the second week on the top spot, Pick Me Up by Hollerado is still number one.
The top 10 countdown for January 16th is over at this link.
After the countdown, I discussed about Arts & Crafts celebrating their 10th anniversary and Broken Social Scene reuniting for one night only. What I forgot to do was mention Broken Social Scene in the playlist set. It’s after Caught a Long Wind by Feist. I blame my co-host for no-showing.
The playlist for the radio show is over at this link.
Finally got New Myspace and my profile is over at this link. Hopefully the new version has a good following and not fizzle out.
All I can say to Gloria, enjoy your time in Nunavut, your presence in Ottawa will be missed but two years can go by quickly.
A Slight Update for April 27, 2011 – Added is the April 27th radio show.
Even though it was a wet and gloomy day, Wednesday’s radio show did not dampen spirits as I played several new tracks and 1980s Cantopop songs. There was no interview segment and the Easter weekend is coming up as it was best to relax and take a break. What was played on the show were the usual top 10 countdown and several songs from a compilation by Paper Bag Records. It’s a cover to a Madonna album called True Blue as that album celebrates 25 years. The artists that took part in the compilation were Young Galaxy, The Acorn, Winter Gloves, The Rural Alberta Advantage and etc.
One the bands in the compilation whom announced their indefinite hiatus. You Say Party does a rendition of Love Makes The World Go Round and is considered to be the band’s final new song. Listening to the track felt bittersweet as the band won’t be together for the foreseeable future. The band will be greatly missed.
There was a shoutout to RTHK’sEllie Davis as I decided to play a brand new song by Emmy The Great. Reason for it was listening to her New Year’s Day show and she interviewed the London-based folk singer. It’s nice to get in touch with other radio hosts elsewhere in the world.
R.I.P. – Elisabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith) of Doctor Who
On a sombre note, it was sad to hear that Elisabeth Sladen, known to Doctor Who fans as Sarah Jane Smith has passed away and it’s days before the return of Doctor Who (Series 6). It was quite a shock and surprise because her passing away was unexpected. Hopeful to do The New Midnight Jamz preshow podcast as myself & show host, DJ Daddy Rich will chat about the unexpected passing of a wonderful and excellent actress.
Just added for April 24, 2011. The New Midnight Jamz on CKCU-FM. The preshow podcast is added as myself and Daddy Rich talked about the passing of Elisabeth Sladen. The songs chosen were played on the tribute which followed the season premiere of Doctor Who in the UK. They were Someone Like You by Adele and She by Elvis Costello.
Without further ado, you can check the playlist at this link.
The Wild 10 Countdown summary is at this link.
April 27th Entry
It looks like I will be hosting solo for the foreseeable future. I’m starting to sound like Doctor Who as companions leave and move on. Enough of the sadness, Wednesday’s show had to do with Sandy Lam because April 26 was her birthday and I realize that last season’s show on the same topic had bad sound quality. It’s great to re-do it again with clearer sound.
I forgot to mention it on the show but on Twitter, Nat and Marie (whomever it was) wanted me to take a photo of what I’m wearing at the radio station. The photo is at this link. It was used on Incredibooth for the iPad 2.
The audio for the April 27th show is in the audio/podcast section. Enjoy!
