The Winchester Warm Interview & The Fun Guests – S06E20

Actually, I didn’t get a chance to take a photo during Winchester Warm’s set from the Raw Sugar Cafe show because I had to leave early due to the cold and the zipper from my jacket broke. The photo above is from Andy Swan’s set as he and a band (consisting of The Acorn’s Rolf Klausener and others). Now, onto Winchester Warm, I had the opportunity to finally chat with them because they recently concluded their Winter tour across Ontario and Eastern Canada. It aired on my radio show at CKCU-FM for Wednesday morning. I was groaning humourously in having to deal with the interview because some parts were light-hearted from the questions they answered.
Onto the radio show, as usual, the new co-host is getting used to the tracks being played and being comfortable on the air. Also returning were the former hosts of Horses Spilled Milk and it was almost a reunion. It was all in great fun as I surprised the three co-hosts with some new music. I still can’t stop playing several UK music and Two Door Cinema Club. I’m pleased that I have gotten good response to the interview. To conclude the month of January, I played a few songs that were considered disappointing to 2010. One of the songs I played, let’s say that I gave up playing in its entirety because it was becoming a nuisance. You will find it funny how I ended the song prematurely.
Unfortunately, the live Internet stream was down on Wednesday morning. For anyone who doesn’t live in Ottawa, they will have to listen on here for what was missed.

Holiday Listening 2009

This is the return of the so-called holiday specials as it will not be linked to my usual entries. This time, these entries will be connected to the radio shows I have been doing. So far, I have played the usual Christmas songs by U2, The Pogues, Mariah Carey, Band Aid and Wham! There’s been a heavy dose of Fairytale of New York being played from the radio show.

December 24-25, 2009 – Merry Christmas to everyone! Hope you take your time reading and listening through this blog entry. I should thank North by East West for providing the new Christmas songs by Canadian independent bands and musicians. Without them, I would not be able to play good Christmas music on my radio show at CKCU-FM.

Wednesday, December 23, 2009 wrapped up the Christmas edition of the radio shows. Played several new Christmas songs by Said The Whale, In-Flight Safety with Jenn Grant and Library Voices. Surprised that I have played Fairytale of New York four times but the other 3 are cover versions. Also on the radio show was The Balconies Christmas interview that I did on a cold Friday, December 18, 2009, prior to their concert at Cafe Dekcuf.

Monday, December 21, 2009 was my final Monday afternoon show. I started the final show by playing the Christmas #1 song in the UK for 2009. That’s right, it’s Rage Against The Machine. The song that trumped the 2009 X-Factor winner was Killing In The Name.
I had a special guest on the show. It was Ben Welland of Sadie Hell. We played our favorite Christmas songs and I did live interview (first time) with Welland as he is promoting his debut album and the gig on January 2, 2010.

Saturday, December 19, 2009 was not Christmas related as I got to be a guest on Midnight Jamz, alternating on Saturdays from 8-10pm on CKCU. Actually, there was talk of Christmas in one of the host break. This radio show mainly plays Hip-Hop, R&B, Dance and Reggae. Near the end of the show, we were all singing along to It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday by Boyz II Men off-air. I had no clue why I was singing along to it with no mistakes.

Monday, December 14 kicked off the Christmas themed show. It was the return of the duo of Horses Spilled Milk and we basically played the Christmas tunes by the mainstream artists and bands.

My Debut Radio Show With Said The Whale Interview & A Sore Throat – S05E12

It couldn’t happen at a bad time when I get a sore throat on my debut regular radio show on CKCU. That’s right, I am now on from 2.30 to 4pm on Mondays. I replace Horses Spilled Milk and Kristal’s Method as I am still saddened that the hosts aren’t around. I made shoutouts to you all, so you better listen. It’s a daunting task to play good songs. Well, to get excited over the debut show, I aired my interview with Said The Whale (photo above from the concert at LiVE Lounge from Thursday night). It’s my first interview to chatting up with a music band and I hope you will like it. I know I will have mistakes doing an interview and hope I can improve later on. I surprised myself with the audio quality because I used the iPod nano. I had a shaky start to the show because of my sore throat but I hope the songs and the interview were good enough.

The Final Method – S05E09

Happy Thanksgiving (in Canada). Due to an original plan of having a special 2 hour show for Kristal’s final radio show, things got confusing as there was a change in the schedule the day before. I was suppose to be the sole host for 90 minutes. Thanks to the host of The Remix Show, who was also hosting his final show on the Monday timeslot. I decided to give the host an extra half hour due to an error in communication. It gave him more time to wrap-up his show as he will be on a new schedule.

Supposedly, the original plan could of happened if there was not a mass confusion. I was feeling down that the hosts of Horses Spilled Milk decided to not come. Good thing Kristal made it for her final show and things were going well. I dubbed it Kristal’s Final Method. I am satisfied with what I played on her final show. I played two 1990s British songs, one was Boyzone and the other was Oasis. It’s sad hearing that one of the members of Boyzone, Stephen Gately, passed away, while Oasis is done as a band.
There’s two song that I played Kristal as a memory and dedication. The first song being Jarhand by Immaculate Machine. The second song is also for Corey & Erica too. I also forgot to mention my friend who’s still in Boston. What’s the second song? Find out and listen.

2 Hours Being On The Radio For Monday – S05E03

It was totally an awesome Monday because I got to co-host not only Horses Spilled Milk, but also Kristal’s Method on CKCU 93.1 FM. I won’t try to write a lot as I provided the audio from both shows, which you can only listen and not download. I hope I don’t get in trouble for it. It’s for my friends who missed out listening to me live.

A summary of Horses Spilled Milk were discussing about The Beatles, The Balconies (read the previous blog entry), a bit on TV Shows (vampire related shows) and the Kanye West–Taylor Swift incident at the 2009 MTV VMAs. It was nice to talk about pop culture. The lovely and main co-host, Erica, had to leave for class after the intro. I had to fill-in for this crazy edition of Horses Spilled Milk.

For Kristal’s show, it was relaxed as we briefly discussed a bit of the Polaris Music Prize Gala for next week, ticket prices at concerts, and some Metric talk. If you are wondering about the second last song being played, here’s the music video provided at the bottom of this entry. I saw the music video on The Wedge on MuchMusic not too long ago. Trust me, you will find the music video hilarious. Think About Life is an electronic-indie rock band from Montreal.

August Extra #4: Joel Plaskett x Three at Ottawa Folk Festival

It’s certainly ironic that Joel Plaskett’s current album is called Three because it is the third time I saw him live (two from last year, one in winter and late Spring). It seems like 3 is a lucky number into itself. Onto Plaskett at Ottawa Folk Festival, he definitely gave an excellent performance because he had his dad, Bill Plaskett, perform along with him. It is different than seeing without his Emergency band because his solo performance from Folk Fest seemed to be a bit mellower than his rock-style with the Emergency. He did some humourous talk during his performances and joked about being delayed at LaGuardia Airport and getting bit by mosquitoes. All in all, it was great and having Amanda Putz MC’ing made it awesome.
What was also funny was my brother got Plaskett to write number 3 in Chinese. It’s such an easy Chinese word to write.
Earlier in the afternoon, I got to check out the “Songs From The Road” songwriters circle with him, Ana Miura, Steven Page and Bruce Cockburn. I didn’t stay too long due to the some reasons (bringing my two month old trusty 13″ MacBook Pro) and I was totally sweating like crazy.

Overall, I had a great time being at Ottawa Folk Festival for that one and only last day. Seeing the usual folks made feel happy and making me laugh. (you know who you are).
Another nice favour I have done for the two CKCU radio shows were giving them a promo of sorts from Plaskett. I hope they will like it.

Well, that’s all for now and will put various Ottawa Folk Festival photos that I took later on. It was an awesome weekend (minus Saturday) with i(heart)music festival on Friday and then the final day of Ottawa Folk Festival.

August Extra #2 – Horses Spilled Milk and Guest Hosting for Kristal’s Method

I know the photo is not really linked to this particular entry but I mentioned at the start of Horses Spilled Milk that I went to Perth, Ontario on Saturday for 2 lion dance performances. Check the 2009 Summer page for the short entry. I had to sub in for co-host for the beginning of the show because he was running late. I was basically a lifesaver for Horses Spilled Milk and Kristal’s Method.
Halfway through Horses Spilled Milk, there was a classic 80s song played and the hint; The Breakfast Club, directed by the late John Hughes.

Afterwards, I unexpectedly decided to guest host Kristal’s Method because Kristal wasn’t around. I had to scramble and figure out what songs to play. I had help from Armen of Thematics at CKCU-FM at the first host break. This time, I totally played 100% Canadian independent music.
