Chinese New Year 2013: The CNY & Valentine’s Day Show – S08E25

CNY at CKCU

Gong Hei Fat Choy again!
It’s an annual thing to do the Chinese New Year edition of the radio show. I finally got Candice to join me for this year’s occasion as I previously wanted her to join me on the 2012 edition of the CNY radio show but she was busy with other things. This year made it happier for myself as we got to talk about the traditions and festivities of Chinese New Year.
As usual, we played the Chinese music related to the holiday, no matter how we scoffed at the cheesy tunes played, it can be similar to Christmas music being played non-stop. There were a few “snake” songs played as this year is “the year of the snake.”

The photo shown has us holding Chinese New Year goodies and decorations. It’s the second year to bring the addictive rice crackers and cannot stop eating those.

Aside from Chinese New Year, we also played some love songs for Valentine’s Day. It was pretty jam packed to playing CNY and V-Day songs and both themes have become a yearly staple for my radio show. For the Valentine’s Day show, I would always play a couple of Cantopop love songs and one in particular has been played on V-Day, which happened to be 情人 (translated as Lover) by Beyond.
To my own astonishment, Candice did not know Firestruck by Young Galaxy. I thought she heard songs from their 2009 album, Invisible Republic.

This week’s Wild 10 Countdown has Hayden at the top spot. The summary and other songs played are over at this link.
You can check the playlist from the CNY & V-Day show over at this link.
Lion dance performances have slightly calmed down after Monday and anticipating for the parade in Ottawa Chinatown this Saturday afternoon. Hope to see you there.

From The Juno Nominees to Love Songs – S07E25

This week’s show has a lot of materials covered as myself and co-host, Lauren talked about the Juno Awards nominees and then playing love songs for Valentine’s Day. The 2012 edition of the Juno Awards will be in Ottawa on April 1st. The nominees were announced on Tuesday and the selections were pretty satisfying as Canadian indie bands and musicians from the likes of Dan Mangan, The Sheepdogs, Braids, Diamond Rings and Hey Rosetta! got Juno nods. It’s nice to see these bands and musicians get recognized.
The next part is the photo above as we did the heart shape symbol. Valentine’s Day is upon us and it’s become a yearly thing to play love songs. As usual, it’s mainly on the Chinese songs and First Love by Utada Hikaru as it deals with love and fitting for Valentine’s Day. DJ Digs joined in the live part of the show.
Since this week’s radio show is pretty jam packed, you can listen to two parts as it’s best to not listen to the entire show in one sitting. The first part is the Wild 10 Countdown and the Juno Awards nominees and the second part is the live show on CKCU-FM. There’s an extra from the live show as we continued to have an entertaining discussion on Valentine’s Day and boy bands.
The playlist for the Feb. 8th show is at this link. The Wild 10 Countdown summary is at this link.

The V-Day Edition Radio Show – S05E36

Wednesday morning’s show was just playing music as I did not want to air an interview because Valentine’s Day is around the corner. Played some love songs from Canadian indie musicians and bands. From the likes of Basia Bulat (who will be in Ottawa for a show on Saturday night), You Say Party! We Say Die! (they released XXXX in the States on Feb. 9), Stars and a rarity for myself to play Justin Rutledge. Just to name a few on the love songs.

One song I played was in an episode of Chuck, Season 1 and played Truly Madly Deeply by Savage Garden. Yes, that is no joke! The last hour had me playing Cantopop love songs.
Almost forgot to mention that Chinese New Year is on the same day as Valentine’s Day. I foolishly forgot to say on-air that it’s the year of. It’s the Year of the Tiger. I will remind myself for next Wednesday morning.

Without further ado, you can check the playlist at this link.
I did two dedications to a friend and you want to know where to find it, fast forward to 1 hr and 39 mins.

You can listen to the show by pressing play.

Apologies for sound quality as the on-air studio had a change in computers. It’s difficult to not know the settings for Adobe Audition. Sometimes the audio quality will vary week in, week out. It’s not under my control.
